Paddling
Paddling along a scenic cove, navigating through kelp beds, feeling the rush of raging rapids in a rubber boat...Northeast Passage’s Paddling program integrates people with disabilities into sea kayaking and white water rafting.
Northeast Passage offers instructor trainings, an Introduction to Paddling Course, and accessible paddling opportunities throughout the summer season. Whether a participant is new to the water sport of kayaking, or would like to rekindle their interest and experience, Northeast Passage offers a wide range of paddling options.
Attention All Kayaking Instructors!!!
Each spring, Northeast Passage partners with the American Canoe Association to host a four-day Adaptive Paddling Workshop (APW), training regional kayaking instructors and enthusiasts in the theory and techniques of adaptive paddling, to create a network of accessible paddling programs in New England. Click here to find the Adaptive Paddling Workshop nearest you!
Introduction to Paddling Course: This is an opportunity for individuals who have significant mobility impairments to receive instruction in kayaking from expert instructors. Participants will learn how to compensate for function lost due to their disability and how to adapt the boat and paddle to best suit their needs. This course includes paddling instruction in a pool session and paddling on calm waters with instructors.
Paddling opportunities: Northeast Passage offers participants the opportunity to explore both fresh and salt water areas around New England. From the tidal waters of Great Bay to Fundy Cove and beyond, Northeast Passage hosts several accessible group paddling opportunities in a variety of locations for people with a wide range of abilities.
Northeast Passage also offers White Water Rafting as part of the
Adaptive Paddling program. Currently, there is no White Water Rafting
programming planned. In the past, Northeast Passage has taken participants
rafting with Zoar
Outdoor Adventures in western Massachusetts and with the New
England Outdoor Center in northern Maine. As with all of Northeast
Passage’s programs, these trips are completely accessible to
participants with a wide range of abilities and friends and family
are always welcome to come along for the ride!
